You Can’t Predict What Goes Viral

You write a post. You reread it. It feels flat, so you hover over delete.
You post it anyway, half-embarrassed. It goes viral. Everything you polished that month barely moved.
Here’s why that keeps happening.
Your discomfort is a bad quality signal
The post you almost delete still has tension in it. The raw line you were not sure about.
The post you polish for an hour often loses that tension. You edit out the thing that would have worked.
So your gut keeps killing the winners.
Reach is not decided by how finished the post feels to you. It’s decided by whether the post holds tension, delays the payoff, and stays shareable.
The 3 moves that make a post travel
Move 1: Start with tension, not a summary
A summary in line one kills the tension before it starts.
Name a discomfort the reader already carries, and leave it open.
My highest-reach post opened with “IKEA replaced 8,500 support jobs with AI.”
No context.
No comfort.
Only the tension.
Move 2: Delay the release
The instinct is to reassure fast. Resist it.
Release the payoff in line two and the reader has no reason to stay.
That IKEA post held the “how could they” for four lines.
Then the reveal: nobody was fired, they were redeployed. The delay is the engine.
Move 3: Close so it is safe to share
People repost what makes them look sharp. They scroll past what makes them look attacked.
End on a line the reader would be proud to co-sign.
A command pulls arguments.
A shared truth pulls reach.
The close decides which one you get.
