Claude skill is a ladder with seven rungs. Every rung has a tell you can spot in ten seconds, and one climb move that takes a week.

The ladder
1. The visitor. Every chat starts blank and you retype who you are. Climb: write three lines of project instructions. Who you are, two writing samples, what it should never do.
2. The prompt collector. A folder of saved prompts, each one works once. Climb: delete the folder and learn the request skeleton: Role, Input, Constraint, Output. One skeleton beats thirty prompts.
3. The setup owner. Chats start warm and output lands at 80%. This is where the crowd stalls, because it feels like arrival. Climb: stop pasting. Connect your real files so Claude works where your work lives.
4. The file worker. Claude reads your drafts and data, writes back in your formats, and context compounds weekly. Climb: install two skills that match jobs already on your calendar. Two you will run before Friday.
5. The skill operator. Repeatable jobs run as named skills, same quality every time. Climb: chain one workflow end to end. One command in, finished deliverable out, with your approval gate in the middle.
6. The system builder. Whole workflows run with quality gates and you rule outcomes, not sentences. Climb: put one system on a schedule and review what lands without you.
7. The delegator. The work runs on a calendar. Decisions come to you; execution does not. The move here is widening: one more gated workflow each month.
What changes
Stop grading yourself on prompt quality.
Grade yourself on level,
then make the one climb move.
A level a week is a realistic pace, and each one compounds on the last.
- At level 2: you spend Sunday hunting prompts.
- At level 6: the finished work waits for your yes.
